Hand, Foot And Mouth Disease? Or Some Other Cause Of Rash In 16 Year Old Girl?

One day during the basketball season I got a text from my daughter saying the athletic trainer was suspecting a possible hand foot mouth disease.

My daughter’s hands and feet were very red, splotchy, and itchy. Her feet felt hot and uncomfortable in her shoes and she wasn’t sure what was going on.

So, I hopped in my car and went to the school to check it out.

It just didn’t make any sense to me. It didn’t seem like an infection of any kind.

The trainer and I decided it wasn’t contagious and she went on to practice, but I still had the task of figuring out what was going on.

I did some testing and figured out it was a problem with MSG. Monosodium Glutamate. It’s a flavor enhancer that is incredibly bad for the body and not something you want in your diet.

Quite often it’s found in Chinese food.

So I questioned my daughter on what she had been eating because we certainly don’t have food with that in our house.

Turns out the day before her breakout, they made Lo Mein in her Culinary class. And this Lo Mein had a lot of MSG in it.

This was a somewhat delayed reaction, but it was definitely from MSG.

Common Symptoms From MSG Are:

  • Flushing
  • Skin Irritation
  • Swelling
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Chest Pain
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Numbness or Tingling
  • Sweating
  • Fatigue

So, if you get any of these symptoms after consuming something with MSG, now you know what the problem is.
