With 3 young kids you get to watch a lot of movies. A tradition at our house is that every weekend, it might be a Friday night or a Saturday night, depending on what is going on, but we have movie night.
We order pizzas, or even make homemade pizzas (these are even really good on the grill), make some popcorn and sit back and relax as a family. It’s a time where we can get into somebody else’s story.
And one of our favorite stories is “The Croods”.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to. It’s about a family of cavemen who are the last survivors of people in their area. They survive because their dad (the voice of Nicolas Cage) is strong and instills fear into them.
They hide in their cave for days on end, until they need food.
They come out and get their food as quickly as they can, and head back to their dark, damp cave.
They are taught to do NOTHING new, and run away from everything.
Sounds like quite the life right?!
Well Eep, the oldest daughter is fed up with it. She argues with her dad constantly about what their purpose is. At one point early in the movie, as the dad (Grugg) is telling young Eep how they have stayed alive, she yells at him…
“That’s not living, that’s just not dying!”
And how true those words are. We live in a society where we are taught to not shake things up, follow directions, stay in line.
It’s too risky to start your own business. What if you fail?
Go to school, get good grades, and get a good job so you can move up the ladder and get a good retirement.
Meanwhile, you hate your job, can’t stand the 1 hour long commute in traffic, and you come home exhausted at the end of the day.
That’s NOT living, that’s just not dying!
Yep, so many of us live this same way.
Now the Croods are forced to move from their safe cave by a changing earth. They are forced to go on a journey of discovery.
They discover that they CAN survive in a new world, doing new things. And not only survive, but thrive. They learn better, faster ways to hunt. They learn about fire and how to create it, and use it to cook their meat.
In short, they learn new skills.
So what can we take away from all this? A children’s movie?
That we CAN make changes in our lives. We CAN change our futures forever. We CAN open up to a new reality that we have never experienced before.
And this is in all areas of our life. I mentioned jobs and career decisions, but that is only one obvious example. How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING.
When it comes to your health, do the uncommon. Make the choices and decisions that the average person won’t make. You’ll be glad you did.
What’s wrong with average?
Just look at the statistics.
And look at them in regards to other countries. Yikes. You’ll soon understand that being average in this country doesn’t really end up faring so well for millions of people compared to other countries.
So be like Eep.
Demand more from your life.
Don’t be content with simply not dying.
LIVE.
and LIVE WELL!
